History

The sport of stock car racing is continuing to draw in record crowds to the more than 300 speedways nationwide. This summer families will flock to the Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, Maryland to help celebrate the speedways 37th birthday. The high banked 3/8th mile clay oval provides affordable family entertainment that has captured the attention of national and local businesses alike since 1973.

Rick Jones won the first Late Model race ever held at the Potomac Speedway on June 10, 1973. The Late Models and Claimers ran in 1973 and 1974 before the Street Stocks were added one year later. The Limited Late Models replaced the Claimer division in 1981 before being replaced itself by the Semi-Late division in 1990. The Street Stock name was changed to Pure Stocks in that same year and was joined by the 4 cylinders and Late Models on the schedule. The Enduro class was added in 1995 to bring a total of five classes to the speedway. The Limited Late Models (replaced Semi-Late), The Street Stocks (replaced Pure Stocks), and The Hobby Stocks (replaced the Enduro) all received the new name changes in 2001 and were joined by the Bombers on the schedule.

The upcoming 2009 racing season will feature the Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks and 4 culinders. The speedway will also hold events for Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Strictly Stocks and Hornets.

The Potomac Speedway is located in scenic St. Mary's County and is approximately one hour south of Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland. Major highways such as Routes 4, 5, and 234 are all linked to US 301 and Interstate 95, giving visitors easy access to the speedway.

Top name drivers from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware will provide all of the racing excitement that one can handle. The Potomac Speedway can hold more than 4000 spectators in the grandstands plus an additional 1000 plus in the pit area.

Race fans are a unique target audience that is known to be brand loyal. This, combined with the great location of the Potomac Speedway, makes this fast paced racing facility a great partner in your business marketing program.
